Choosing to have your baby with the help of midwives has so many benefits for both mother and baby! Studies done on midwife attended birth repeatedly support the safety and advantages of birth with midwives, either in the comfort and privacy of your home or in a free-standing birth center. The word midwife means, quite literally, WITH WOMAN. Not in front of woman, over woman, or above woman. WITH WOMAN. This view of women working with women as a team is the foundation of what is known as the Midwives Model of Care™ Midwives can help you have the special birth you and your baby deserve. Our goal is to help you achieve this with the personalized, one-on-one care that a Certified Professional Midwife provides. Midwifery Services of South Texas provides a full range of services for pregnant women in the San Antonio area including: All midwifery care is provided by State Licensed and NARM Certified Professional Midwives, with medical consultation and back-up through a private obstetrician. Prenatal care is flexible, with offices in the Floresville - Elmendorf area. Home prenatal visits can be arranged. For detailed information on all of our services see the Midwife Services page. Our Philosophy Pregnancy and birth are normal life events - not diseases. A woman's body is designed for giving birth, and childbirth happens the way it does because it is the best and safest method of bringing our children into the world. For the normal healthy woman, interfering in the natural birth process actually creates many of the very problems we want to avoid. Mothers are not meant to be drugged, babies are not meant to be separated from their mothers. Mothers do not need to be rescued from labor, and babies do not need to be rescued from birth! Interfering with a healthy mother delivering a healthy baby is not only a violation of the miracle of birth, it is also unsafe.

Homebirths Attended by Midwives are Safe For Low-Risk Women A ground breaking study, the largest of its kind, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) showed that planned homebirths attended by Certified Professional Midwives are safer than hospital births. The results support the American Public Health Associations (APHA) recommendation to increase access to out-of-hospital maternity care services with direct entry midwives in the United States.
